So what’s this Primal/Paleo diet?

Happy New Year! I hope 2017 is your best year ever. If you’re reading this, you’re probably looking for guidance on improving your diet. You may be asking, that is this Primal / Paleo diet I’ve heard about?

Primal / Paleo is a lifestyle, not just a diet. In summary, these diets are predicated on modern aspects of our diets being unhealthy – our genes haven’t adapted to newer aspects of nutrition such as hybrid wheat, sugar and GMO foods which have been added to our diets relatively recently. We can thrive on the foods that man has been eating for thousands of years – meats, vegetables, nuts and low sugar fruits in moderation.

As we eat today, this means a diet of meats, fish, eggs, nuts, and low starch vegetables. If you’re burning a lot of calories with activity, starchier carbs like sweet potatoes are included as well. Cooking fats are allowed, but not vegetable oils – olive oil, coconut oil, butter (if you tolerate dairy), ghee, or bacon fat are Primal-friendly choices.

It may be a big mindset change to not be afraid of fat and red meat-but our ancestors lived that way for many years. Research suggests that it is the addition of sugar and wheat to our diets that has done damage to our health in modern times.
